What a Dog Needs VI

A Dog needs it’s Hero to be

“You”

Every day my dog looks at me with the look of amazement, I am the most special thing in his life, I am his hero! Living up to that kind of praise, if from a human is impossible, but from a dog is easy. I am sure my dog thinks I am the greatest hunter ever, every day twice a day my dog gets healthy, tasty, and fun raw food, but even when I fed him kibble he was happy.

You are your Dog's Hero, Living up to your dog's expectations is not difficult. It is a must!

You are your Dog’s Hero, Living up to your dog’s expectations is not difficult. It is a must!

Dogs need variety in their lives, they need to make new friends both human and dog, and sometimes even cat! They need to be challenged! Your dog depends on his Hero “YOU” to introduce him/her to new friends and new interests. Dogs have become instinctively drawn to human contact, my dog Teal’c would rather meet people than other dogs, but to keep him a good well rounded dog (and give me a rest) I ensure that he has time to run and play with other dogs on a regular basis, and to come with me when I go places, give him chances to make mistakes so I can correct him without anger or violence so he will learn.

Dogs are happiest when they know their position in life, and that position is one they are comfortable with. You as your dog’s Hero, must hold the position that you know best, and must be followed without question with no anger or violence from you or the dog. This can be best accomplished by sticking to the rules you set without any lapses. This can be be difficult and time consuming at first, the dog will learn! Both you and your Dog will be happier for the effort.

Dogs do not need the show of affection the way humans do, just walking your dog is a massive show of affection on your part, petting and touching the dog around the face or cuddling is not the show of affection your dog wants, play and calm discipline is. Sometimes a dog does want to be held or petted on the face but it is not often nor for a long time, thirty seconds at most.

Cuddles are usually short and then turn to play.

Cuddles are usually short and then turn to play.

Often we look to our dogs for what we need, and that is usually love, but taking love from your dog is the wrong way, giving your dog what your dog needs will turn into your dog giving you more love than you can take, you just have to recognize that a dog shows affection of the touching kind in short bursts, the long shows of affection are lying at your feet, following you everywhere, or just the way the dog looks at you. Too often dogs become stressed by over affection of the human kind, this makes a dog NOT happy and this turns into behavior issues, no animal even humans perform well when stressed.

Be your Dog’s Hero

Show your dog Love in ways it will understand.

Thinking about my Dog

After recently learning of the passing of Pootchy, I began wondering how would I react if Teal’c, my dog, were to pass away? I have had many dogs before, but then I worked, had other obligations, family to care for. Now I am retired, and it is just Teal’c and I, there are friends and family but few obligations, Teal’c and I spend all our time together from the time we get up in the morning, with a cold loving nose in my face, to the time we fall asleep at night, Teal’c lying with his back pressed up against me.

Daily together we go about our business, we both love walking and hiking, we meet many people who all seem to be impressed with Teal’c, who is always eying me with affection and become instantly aware of the tight bond between us.

Just now, sensing my sadness, Teal’c came and placed his front paws on my lap over the arm of the chair and pressed his head against my chest occasionally lifting his head and staring into my face then the kiss. This lasted about three minutes, until he knew I was OK, now he is lying on the floor beside me.

The love I receive from this Dog is greater than any love I have received or felt from any human.

The thought of loosing him is……..sorry there are no words that can explain it! I hope that we pass together at the same time as I am sure that the loss of me would be just as devastating to Teal’c, but until that time we have many more joyful times to experience and share with you.

So we are off again, this time I think Teal’c deserves an Ice-cream cone.

A friend has passed on.

Pootchy

Born 17 April 2001 Died 5 May 2013

Pootchy would greet Teal’c and I whenever we walked by, always with a happy wag of her tail. Often her stiff limbs would mare it difficult to stand but she would always insist on greeting us no mater the difficulty or how she felt. It was obvious to anyone that even in her old age she was enjoying life. Due to sever illness, and the vet not able to assist her any longer, her owners did the responsible thing and put her out of her misery. The hardest thing any dog owner must do.

She will live on in our memories as a friendly and loving friend, Teal’c and I will never forget the smiles she gave us by the wag of her tail. The walks by her home will never be the same, Teal’c still looks for her every time we pass by.

Pootchy be at peace

You were a good and loyal companion.

What A Dog Needs III

A Dog Needs Leadership

Part 1

Some people call it  discipline, some training, I prefer the term

“Leadership”

Dogs are animals of instinct, and to change how they act or to have them perform tasks, is at times, going against their instinct, you must have good leadership skills to do this, without being cruel to your dog. Leadership is the ability to see the potential in your dog and bring it out in fun and productive ways. Leadership enables you to overcome the instinctual response of your dog and replace it with the one you want. In the following video you will see my dog Teal’c on a windy day, Teal’c gets stressed when there is high winds, loud noises, or thunder. I have worked with Teal’c since he was a pup he is close to five now, in the beginning on a windy day like this I would have to keep him on a lead to control him, or the flight response would kick in and I would have to go searching for him.

Of course you have to work first with your dog when it is not stressed, you need to be able to recognize when your dog is stressed, upset, happy, or angry, and this can only be accomplished by working with your dog and educating yourself. When you work with your dog do it in the same frame of mind every time, have fun, be calm, do not change your approach if the dog is stressed, just be mindful that the dog is stressed and things may not go as usual. The calmer you are the  easier the task will be.

Educate yourself, read books, talk to other dog owners, research the things that give you problems. Never take the point of view that you are correct or that you know it all, yea I have done it and the kick in the pants you get when you realize you were a fool is not a necessary part of leadership but it is a good and important lesson to learn!

Understand your Dog.

Observe all dogs you meet, look for signs of happiness, fear, stress, sadness, learn from them. See how dogs respond in different situations when you understand why a dog is reacting in a way that is not acceptable your chances of correcting it have increased ten fold.

Educating yourself is the key to Training your dog.

A well-trained dog requires an owner that is observant, willing to learn, and stay the course.
