Raw Diet – Questions Answered

Questions Answered

My dog is always hungry since placing him on a raw diet, is he getting enough food?

With canned and kibble dog foods there are a lot of fillers and the dog gets to eat a lot more quantity, not quality. Your dog being accustomed to eating large quantities may indeed feel hungry but may not need more food. you can lessen your dog’s discomfort by adding whole vegetables like sweet potato, broccoli, cauliflower, these will not add much nutrition but are good for your dog, they will not cause your dog to gain weight.

The typical food calculators for determining how much to feed your dog are estimates only. They do not take factors like stress, exercise, health, weather ( cold temperatures ) into account.

It is important to weigh your dog on a weekly basis whenever you change your dog’s diet. Your vet should welcome you to weigh your dog free of charge, if they insist on charging, you should consider changing vet. Going to the vet weekly has other benefits, your dog will become accustomed to going to the vet and see it in a more positive light making all future vet visits more pleasing for you and your dog.

My dog’s stool is hard as a rock and has difficulty passing stool, what do I do?

Much of the raw dog food contains crushed bone (this is good for your dog) and it causes your dog’s stool to firm up, too much will cause constipation and stool that is too firm. If you can lessen the amount of bone in the diet, or add a little pumpkin puree not much is needed my dog when he has this problem only requires a tablespoon full and he weighs 50 lbs. Don’t be afraid to experiment to find out what works for your dog, remember things do change and there may come a time when the pumpkin is no longer needed or more bone will be required.

My dog has watery stool, what is causing this, how do I fix this problem?

There are several causes for soft or watery stool first rule out illness or infection!

Other causes may be an allergic reaction to the food, your raw dog food supplier should supply different kinds of meat and organ, try just chicken, or pork, or fish. When you find one that your dog handles well try others to determine what your dog is allergic to then never feed your dog the culprit again.

In the short term a little pumpkin puree will help to firm up your dog’s stool. This is magical stuff for dogs it helps maintain a dogs stool at a proper firmness. This is epically helpful if the cause of the soft stool is something your dog ingested that was not part of his regular diet.

Where do I find a raw food calculator?

The supplier of my dog food has one on their page, here is the link RawPaw it is at the very bottom of the page.

Feeding a dog raw meat will make them vicious.

Poppy Cock!

My dog Teal’c is a pleasant companion before and after being on a raw diet. There is NO evidence that any food that can make any animal vicious.

The causes for dogs becoming vicious are Constant pain, the owner’s training methods, or a neurological disease. Distemper is NOT a cause of dogs becoming vicious.

Doesn’t raw food increase the chances of salmonella, E coli or other poisonings?

NO!

Thousands of dogs are poisoned every year from e coli or salmonella on kibble diets than any other, to my knowledge there has not been one confirmed case of this type of positing from commercial raw food. In Canada the raw food for the dog food market is tested twice, once to enter the normal food market (human) then again after processing for the pet food market, so, in reality, it is tested more than our food.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin a natural Stool Remedy

Pumpkin patch in Half Moon Bay.

It is that time of year again. My favorite cooler temperatures making long hikes with Teal’c (my dog) more enjoyable. There is another benefit for Teal’c, Pumpkins. Pumpkin is the best natural stool medicine for dogs. It will harden soft stool and soften stool that is too hard. It helps correct extreme runny stool helping your dog from dehydration.

Amazing stuff just purée the pumpkin and freeze it in ice-cube trays and store in freezer  bags for when needed. It usually only takes one cube thawed and added to your dog’s meal to correct the stool problem, often associated with change in diet, traveling, or stress. If pumpkin does not solve the problem quickly take a stool sample to your vet with your dog as there is probably something more serious going on.
